Girish Mathrubootham: The Visionary Behind Freshworks’ Success

Humble Beginnings and Entrepreneurial Journey
Girish Mathrubootham, the Freshworks founder, was born on 29 March 1975 in Tamil Nadu, India. He grew up in a middle-class family and displayed a passion for technology from an early age. After completing his Bachelor’s in Engineering from Madras University in 1990, Mathrubootham earned an MBA from the prestigious Indian Institute of Management Bangalore in 1992.
Seeking new opportunities, he moved to the United States in 1995 to pursue a career in venture capital. However, his entrepreneurial spirit soon took over as he co-founded several successful tech startups, including the cloud-based customer engagement platform Freshworks (formerly Freshdesk) in 2010.

Passion for Technology and Gaining Industry Experience
Before launching Freshworks, Girish Mathrubootham gained invaluable experience in the software industry. Subsequently, he joined Zoho Corporation as the Vice President of Engineering, overseeing product strategy and customer support until 2009.
Motivation and Inspiration to Start Freshworks (formerly Freshdesk)
While working at Zoho, Mathrubootham noticed a gap in the market for affordable and user-friendly customer support software. Inspired by the opportunity, he left his position as Vice President to co-found Freshworks (then called Freshdesk) with his colleague Shan Krishnasamy in 2010.
The company was launched in Chennai, India, and quickly gained traction by offering cloud-based customer support solutions to businesses of all sizes. Freshworks’ suite of products, including Freshdesk, Freshservice, Freshsales, and Freshchat, helped businesses manage customer support, IT services, sales, and messaging efficiently.

Building a Successful Company Culture
Girish Mathrubootham is a leader who values company culture and employee motivation. He believes in celebrating small wins and aligning individual activities with the company’s overall goals, following the Objectives and Key Results (OKR) framework.
Mathrubootham encourages his team to embrace disagreement, act like owners, and understand that sometimes employees may not be a good fit for a particular role, but that doesn’t make them bad employees. His leadership approach has fostered a positive and productive work environment at Freshworks, contributing to the company’s success.
With over 50,000 customers worldwide, including names like Honda, Cisco, Toshiba, Bridgestone, University of Pennsylvania, and Hugo Boss, Freshworks has raised more than $250 million in funding. The company, now headquartered in California with offices across multiple countries, continues to grow and innovate under Mathrubootham’s guidance.
The Birth of a Customer-Centric Unicorn
Freshworks’ Bootstrapped Journey
Freshworks had modest beginnings. Co-founders Girish Mathrubootham and Shan Krishnasamy started the company with limited funds. They handled various roles, from product development to marketing, working hard to build their customer engagement platform.
In a market with established competitors, it was challenging for Freshworks to gain traction. The company focused on providing great customer experiences through user-friendly solutions. They continuously improved their products based on customer feedback.

Freshworks understands that customers are people with different needs, not just numbers or sources of revenue. This customer-centric approach is present in all areas of the company, from how they develop products to how they engage employees and communities.
Mathrubootham’s Vision and Milestones
For Girish Mathrubootham, Freshworks’ Nasdaq listing in September 2021 at a valuation of $10.1 billion after raising $1.03 billion in its IPO was a dream realized. It showed his commitment to building a company focused on people, not just business goals. Along with co-founder Shan Krishnasamy, Mathrubootham has emphasized inclusive growth and leadership that values compassion and empathy over pure profits.
Mathrubootham’s business skills and understanding of the customer engagement market have shaped Freshworks’ direction and helped guide it through challenges.
As Freshworks grows, its focus on exceptional customer experiences and people-centric values remain key to its success and position as a leading customer-focused company in the global software industry.
