Types of YouTube Ads and How to Use Them Effectively

Before you dive into creating your first YouTube ad campaign, it’s essential to understand the different types of ads available and how to leverage them effectively.

TrueView Ads: The Viewer-Friendly Option

TrueView ads are the most popular advertising format on YouTube, and for a good reason. These ads give viewers control over the advertisements they see, allowing them to skip or choose which ads they want to watch. Advertisers only pay for TrueView ads when viewers watch for at least 30 seconds, watch the entire short video, or interact with the ad by clicking on a call-to-action.

There are two main types of TrueView ads:

TrueView In-Stream Ads:

These ads play before a viewer’s chosen video and feature a countdown timer and a link to the advertised site. They also have a companion banner ad displayed in the right-hand sidebar.

TrueView Discovery Ads:

These ads appear in YouTube search results and the watch page sidebar, consisting of an image thumbnail and up to three lines of text.

TrueView ads are a great way to reach your target market in a non-intrusive manner. They’re low-risk, as you only pay when viewers are engaged, and they allow for creative formats like product demos, testimonials, or how-to videos.

Non-Skippable In-Stream Ads: Maximizing Exposure

Non-skippable in-stream ads are similar to TrueView in-stream ads, but viewers cannot skip them. These ads must be between 15 and 20 seconds long, and advertisers pay on a cost-per-mille (CPM) basis, meaning they pay a fee per thousand views. Non-skippable ads are ideal for branding campaigns designed to achieve massive exposure, but it’s crucial to hone your ad targeting to avoid wasting your budget on poor prospects.

Bumper Ads: Brevity is Key

Bumper ads are non-skippable video ads that play before a viewer’s chosen video and must be less than 6 seconds long. Like non-skippable ads, advertisers pay for bumper ads on a CPM basis. These ads are perfect for creating memorable, concise brand impressions and can be used as part of a larger YouTube advertising campaign.

Sponsored Card Ads: Unobtrusive and Actionable

YouTube sponsored cards appear within videos as small call-to-action (CTA) pop-ups. They are an unobtrusive form of advertising, allowing viewers to expand the card if interested. Sponsored cards can showcase other YouTube videos or products through Google Shopping.

Overlay Ads and Display Ads: Simple and Effective

Overlay ads are banner ads that appear along the bottom of videos, while display ads are displayed in the right-hand sidebar above the suggested videos list. These simple ad formats can be effective for brand awareness and driving traffic to your website.

Choosing the Right YouTube Ad Format

When selecting the appropriate YouTube ad format, consider your marketing objectives-

  • Brand Awareness: Using non-skippable in-stream and bumper ads can effectively introduce your product to new audiences.
  • Buyers decision– Using TrueView ads with product demos or testimonials can be powerful and influence buyers’s decision.
  • Growing sales– Consider targeting lookalike audiences with TrueView discovery ads or sponsored card ads.
  • Increasing brand loyalty– Invite your customers to share their experiences in your TrueView ads.

By understanding the different YouTube ad formats and how to leverage them effectively, you can create a successful advertising campaign that resonates with your target audience and drives meaningful results for your business.

Step 5. Set Up Ad Groups and Audience Targeting

Set up your ad groups with descriptive names. Then define your target audience demographics like gender, age, parental status, and household income. Further refine using the Audiences section options:

  • In-market audiences: Recent searchers for related keywords
  • Life events: Major life milestones
  • Custom intent audience: Based on researched products/services
  • Remarketing: Previous interactions with your brand
  • Affinity and custom affinity: Interests, URLs, places, apps

Additionally, you can narrow your reach using Keywords (directly enter keywords or get suggestions), Topics (choose broad topics like Arts & Entertainment then dive into sub-topics), and Placements (target specific websites, YouTube videos/channels).

Step 7. Create Your YouTube Video Ad

  • Now create your actual video ad.
  • Search for or enter the URL of your existing YouTube video. Or go to YouTube and upload your new video ad creative.
  • YouTube supports 16:9 landscape, 9:16 vertical, and 1:1 square video aspect ratios.
  • Choose the Skippable in-stream ad format.
  • Enter the destination URL where you want viewers to go after clicking your ad – ideally a custom landing page on the same domain as your display URL to comply with policies.
  • Include a clear, concise call-to-action overlaid on your video.
  • You can also upload (or auto-generate) a companion banner ad to show at the top right of your video on desktop after the intro plays or if skipped.
